One month in Peru

Posted on by Sandy

Niños de los Andes

My name is Sandy, I'm 24 years old and I arrived in Peru a month ago. We live and work at Niños de los Andes which is situated in Nueva Villa, a district of Nasca in the south of Peru.

Niños de los Andes has for mission to help the disadvantaged children who live in its center. The main objective of the association is to offer a chance at these kids to go to school.

In order to do so, Niños de los Andes welcome about twenty kids and take care of them by providing food, house and care.

To finance the project, the association created a center of languages who proposes classes in French, English and Italian for adults and a multilingual school for advantaged kids.

Our volunteer's work

Our work as volunteers is to teach foreigns languages at the school and at the languages' center. Personally, I teach French to 2 years old, English to 3, 4 and 5 years old and English to adults (in the center of languages).

Beside, we also do the homeworks help with the kids of Niños de los andes every afternoon after school.

Everyday, in turns we pick up the kids from school to bring them back to the center.

We share every meal ( breakfast, lunch and dinner) with the children.

On saturdays, our mission is to clean the languages' center and to redo the paintings of the private's school walls.

One month already!

This first month has been really busy and a little bit complicated for me because I do not speak Spanish and it takes sometines to understand everyone. It 's also a challenge to take care of the kids and share with them when I don't understand everything and when I can't explain all I would like.

Nevertheless, my Spanish is improving little by little and I can be usefull with the kids by doing other activities (for example for the homework help I can help with maths).

The kids are really nice and full of energy. They are very smart and deserve all the work that we do for them.

The discovery of a new country

To be a volunteer it's also to have this wonderfull chance to be able to discover new activites and new landscapes. On March 24th, we went to San Fernando. We travelled for a 10 hours roundtrip on motos across the desert to access the beach of the Pacific's Ocean, it was extremely beautiful and a very rare instant.

This kind of travel makes us understand how beautiful is our planet and how important is it to preserve it.
