The inestimable value of water.

Posted on by Sandy

Volunteer’s life is full of surprise. Here, for example, we need to be very careful with the water. Indeed, Nasca is situated in the aridest part of Peru. Each house has a water tank in her roof. Our has a countenance of 1100 liters of water and need to be refill every week so the management of the water is a daily worry.

Each water economy is important and this is why we recycle most of what we can. For example, when we wash our hands, we salvage the water in a bucket to use it for the WC. As well, every time we take a shower, the used water is save in a basin and it's also used for the toilets.

Also, the top water is not drinkable. So, to be able to drink, we need to put some water in a container and to add a pastille to sterilize it. When we prepare the water, we need to wait two hours before being able to drink it safely.

From time to time, when we haven’t been careful enough and we didn’t realize soon enough that the water tank was empty; we have no water for a few hours. Those are the hours when we realize how important the water is and how often we use it on a daily basis.

The showers are also different here. Firstly, we can’t stay too long (to economize the water) and secondly the water is cold. Lucky for us the weather is very hot but it might become harder in the winter (which will arrive soon).

Sometimes it strikes me how Peru is full of contrast. We can have the Wifi in the bus (to travel from Lima to Nasca for example) but we cannot have running (drinkable) water.
