My first earthquake in Peru

Posted on by Anna

Nasca is a city because is located on a tectonic plate, in the middle of the desert. Here people are used to earthquakes, in fact they know all safety measures in case of this calamity and they don’t have panic. All buildings in our village are safe, because they are made of cement. Also in primary school we have done one simulation of the measures anti-seismic with all kids. As teachers we went out of the class in queue and we made circles with all students in signed places, singing with them songs, trying to be happy and not worried, and it worked of course because it was not true! By the way, my first earthquake in Peru was one important experience. It was on the 18th of May, during my English class of the night. Really at the beginning I didn’t understand that it was one earthquake, because it was as fast as I didn’t realize it. We felt that the roof and the walls were moving and suddenly my students said me: “Temblor!”. We quickly went out of the class following the exit plaque and we put together in the garden, with all the other class of adults of the linguistic centre. We spoke, we stayed close to each other, waiting, but luckily there weren’t any earthquake more. We entered in and we sat in class. I tried to speak English and to look calm but really I was a little choked, so my students that saw it, asked me if it was the first time that I had lived it and it was! The class was finishing so we shared experiences of earthquakes, and they told me how many times they lived this, although one person never get used to. In the last few weeks, we had two more earthquakes and now I begin to be colder and to think exactly what I have to do when it happens.
